Section Spotlight: Washington DC

After a recent merger, the SAE Washington DC Local Section has expanded to include all of Virginia—growing to over 800 members. In addition to mobility programming and events, the DC Section also works closely with SAE Collegiate Chapters and Collegiate Design Series (CDS) teams in the area, organizing showcase events where students have a chance to share their projects with industry.

Mobility & Social Events
DC Section Members can participate in a range of local events including technical sessions as well as fun social gatherings such as automotive engineering and mobility trivia nights and a virtual car show:

  • IIHS Crash Test Virtual Tour.  Co-hosted with the SAE Detroit Section, members had a chance to watch a recording of the virtual tour and crash test at the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). IIHS experts were available to answer questions following the presentation
  • SAE Government Industry Meeting. Each year, the SAE DC Section is actively involved the annual SAE Government Industry Meeting in Washington, DC.
  • Virtual Car Show. With a number of car collectors in the area, the DC Section’s first annual virtual car show was a huge success with 14 entries and more 90 minutes talking about cars.

Community Engagement
To help support the communities where DC Section Members live and work, the DC Section is actively involved with charitable activities, collegiate sponsorships, and volunteering:

  • Regional Science Fair Volunteers. As a way to give back and support STEM education for students in the DC area, DC Section Members volunteer to serve as judges for regional K-12 science fairs.
  • Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser. The DC Section hosts an annual golf tournament to raise funds to support area students in science and engineering, with their inaugural event in 2018 raising more than $2,000.
  • Collegiate Sponsorships. To help support students, the DC Section regularly sponsors university level groups including $5,000 in collegiate sponsorships at the SAE GIM Student Showcase.

Whether you’re an engineering student or experienced mobility engineer, if you live in the DC or Virginia area consider joining the SAE Washington DC Local Section.

“This section has a lot of energy. That energy is fueled by meetings and events that give us an opportunity to connect socially, away from the hard topics of our day jobs, where we can see things from a different angle.”
