Engine Testing Focus of New SAE International Book

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 15, 2009 - The internal combustion engine is explored in SAE International’s latest book, a useful tool for both new and established engineers responsible for engine testing and development.

Authored by Richard D. Atkins, “An Introduction to Engine Testing and Development” explains the test process – from setting up a dynamometer test facility to testing for performance and durability.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to: the test facility and engine power measurement methods, in-cell services, spark plugs, exhaust gas emissions, combustion analysis, turbochargers, base calculations and quality standards for engine testing.

“There is no doubt that fantastic advances are being made at an accelerating rate, but the internal combustion engine is an extremely complex device, requiring a sound understanding of many disciplines,” Atkins said.

This book is recommended for graduate engineers and professionals in the engine testing and development field.  Universities and technical colleges may use this book for course instruction.

Atkins is a consultant to major automotive companies in the European and Asian markets.  Also, he is a visiting senior research fellow at Sussex University and a visiting fellow at Kingston University.  With more than 40 years of experience working with internal combustion engines, Atkins has been involved in the development of Formula I race engines.  He later formed his own company to manufacture fuel injection systems for race cars and motorcycles.

The list price of Atkins’ 308-page hardbound book is $79.95; SAE International members can purchase it for $63.96.  Bulk purchase discounts also are available. For more information, please visit http://www.sae.org/technical/books/R-344.
