Texas A&M’s McDermott Honored by SAE International for Excellence in Engineering Education

WARRENDALE, Pa., June 9, 2009 - Make McDermott Jr., retired Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, is the recipient of SAE International's Excellence in Engineering Education Award. He was honored at the SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit.

The award, established in 1995, recognizes outstanding contributions to the SAE Engineering Education Board. The award is funded through the SAE Foundation.

McDermott retired in 2007 as Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M, where he has taught and conducted research since 1972. He now teaches design part-time and advises the university’s Formula Hybrid™ team.

McDermott has been the principal investigator for research projects totaling more than $4 million. His research on automotive adaptive equipment for handicapped drivers provided the basis for SAE Standard J2092 on wheelchair lifts for vans.

From 1994 to 2007, McDermott served as the faculty adviser to the Texas A&M student chapter of SAE International, which won Formula SAE competitions in 2000, 2006 and 2007. He was honored with the FSAE/SCCA Carroll Smith Mentor’s Cup in 2005 and was head design judge at the first two Formula Hybrid competitions in 2007 and 2008. He also has been recognized with teaching awards by the Texas A&M student chapter of ASME, the Dwight Look College of Engineering, Texas A&M University and ASEE.

McDermott holds bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees from the University of Texas–Austin. He resides in College Station, Texas.
