Boeing Technical Fellow Sikand to Receive SAE International Air Transportation Progress Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., July 17, 2009 - Sharanpal Sikand, a Technical Fellow at Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, is the recipient of SAE International's Franklin W. Kolk Air Transportation Progress Award. He will be presented the award during the SAE 2009 AeroTech Congress and Exhibition in Seattle, Nov. 10-12.

The award, established in 1978, recognizes an individual for contributing to air transportation and/or the work of the SAE aerospace technical committees. The award commemorates the late Franklin W. Kolk and his contributions to the advancement of civil air transportation and SAE International.  The award is funded through the SAE Foundation.

In addition to being a Technical Fellow at Boeing Integrated Defense Systems in Long Beach, Calif., Sikand is an authorized representative of the Federal Aviation Administration. His technical expertise includes airplane propulsion systems, auxiliary power units, fuel, fire protection systems and design integration. Prior to entering the aerospace industry in 1987, Sikand designed offshore drilling rigs for Global Marine Drilling Co., where he pioneered several technologies.

Sikand has written more than 20 papers and has been awarded two patents. He previously received the Boeing Special Invention Award and is past President and founding Director of the Southern California chapter of the American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin (ASEI).

Sikand earned a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a master's in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. He resides in Irvine, Calif.
