Boeing Technical Fellow Hariram to Receive SAE International Marvin Whitlock Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., July 17, 2009 - Sham S. Hariram, a Technical Fellow at The Boeing Company in Renton, Wash., is the recipient of SAE International's Marvin Whitlock Award. He will be presented the award during the SAE 2009 AeroTech Congress and Exhibition in Seattle, Nov. 10-12.

The award, established in 1988, recognizes an individual for significant technical contributions related to the operational availability of aircraft. Operational availability includes areas such as repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification and safety. The award commemorates the late Marvin Whitlock, former Senior Vice President of Maintenance and member of the Board of Directors for United Airlines. The award is funded through the SAE Foundation.

Hariram is a Boeing Technical Fellow responsible for the design, development and certification of engine fire protection systems. Internationally recognized as an expert in Aircraft Fire Protection Systems, Hariram is an FAA/Boeing Authorized Representative for engine fire protection, fuel systems, engine installations, and systems and equipment. He supports the design and certification of the engine and auxiliary power-unit fire-extinguishing system for the 787 program. He also is a Design Approval Engineer responsible for providing fleet support and technical support and guidance to all Boeing divisions. He has a number of patents and is involved in finding alternatives to Halon fire-extinguishing systems on aircraft.

An active member of SAE International, Hariram has published and presented numerous papers at conferences. He also has been presented with the Boeing Special Invention Award and numerous Boeing Acheivement Awards.

Hariram earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the Phillipines. He resides in Seattle.
