Hariram Earns SAE International Marvin Whitlock Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 15, 2010 - Sham S. Hariram, Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company, was honored with the 2007 SAE International Marvin Whitlock Award during the SAE 2009 AeroTech Congress and Exhibition, held last fall in Seattle, Wash.

The award acknowledges and commemorates the distinctive management contributions of the late Marvin Whitlock, Senior Vice President-Maintenance and a member of the Board of Directors of United Air Lines. It recognizes an individual for significant technical contributions and/or innovation related to operational availability of aircraft. Operational availability includes areas such as repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification and safety.

In his role with Boeing, Hariram is responsible for the certification of Engine Fire Protection Systems. He is an FAA/Boeing Authorized Representative for Engine Fire Protection, Fuel Systems, Engine Installations and Systems and Equipment. He supports the design and certification of the engine and APU fire extinguishing system on the 787 program, and is a Design Approval Engineer and is responsible for Fleet Support and Production Support of engine installation configurations on existing airplanes.  Hariram provides technical support and guidance to all Boeing Divisions and is currently involved in finding alternatives to Halon fire extinguishing systems for aircraft.

His smoke detection system is an industry standard in more than 3,000 airplanes worldwide, and he has made breakthrough inventions in aircraft fire protection, fuel tank fire protection systems, and engine electronic control cooling.  In addition, Hariram has taught systems engineering classes specializing in airplane fire protection and he is an accident investigator who represents Boeing at accident investigations. 

Hariram is a member of SAE International, the Boeing Management Club, the Amelia Earhart Society, the Society for Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, and an Aviator Member of the Boeing Museum of Flight.

He received a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Philippines and he earned credits toward a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Philippines. He also has taken numerous training courses in subjects including Computer Programming and Management Development at Fluor Corporation and Boeing, as well as external training courses.
