Collipi Earns SAE International Marvin Whitlock Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 15, 2010 - Thomas Collipi, Technical Fellow with Northrop Grumman Corporation, was honored with the 2008 SAE International Marvin Whitlock Award during the SAE 2009 AeroTech Congress and Exhibition, held last fall in Seattle, Wash.

The award acknowledges and commemorates the distinctive management contributions of the late Marvin Whitlock, Senior Vice President-Maintenance and a member of the Board of Directors of United Air Lines. It recognizes an individual for significant technical contributions and/or innovation related to operational availability of aircraft. Operational availability includes areas such as repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification and safety.

In his role with Northrop Grumman, Collipi provides Life Cycle Logistics and Support guidance and analysis for multiple advanced programs and technology efforts.  Since joining the company, he has held positions of increasing technical and managerial responsibility.  He played a key role in the establishment of the E- 8C Joint STARS Total System Support Responsibility (TSSR) program.  As a result of his efforts, he was among the team of U.S. Air Force and contractor personnel who received the David Packard award for Acquisition Excellence by the Department of Defense.

In 2008, Collipi received a patent for “Method and Apparatus for Analyzing Surveillance Systems Using a Total Surveillance Time Metric.” (US 7,436,295 B2) This method was developed because traditional system reliability and maintainability metrics fail to measure adequately the military utility of the system to the user for intelligence surveillance reconnaissance platforms.

Collipi graduated with honors from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree.
