SAE International and NFPA Electric Vehicle Safety Standards Summit Slated for September 27-28 - Continues Dialogue on Standards/Codes Development
WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 18, 2011 - The 2nd Annual Electric Vehicle Safety Standards Summit, co-hosted by SAE International and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), provides a forum in which all relevant individuals, organizations and agencies can contribute to the development of action plans regarding the codes and standards necessary to effectively address safety as it relates to electrified vehicles and their infrastructure. Electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) safety related issues are key concerns to numerous standards and codes development organizations and agencies and will be a key determinant of consumer acceptance of these vehicles.
Safety representatives of vehicle and equipment manufacturers, fire protection specialists, electrical safety organizations and emergency responders, as well as governmental entities at the federal, state, and local level involved in enhancing consumer safety and interagency communications, are encouraged to participate in this Summit. The deadline for discounted registration for the Summit is September 6, 2011.
Scheduled for September 27-28 at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center Hotel, the Summit is a continuation of a dialogue held last year which began the work of compiling a comprehensive assessment of relevant safety standards and codes and identifying issues requiring the modification of existing, or the creation of new, standards and codes to facilitate the safe implementation of electric vehicles.
Day one of this year’s Summit will include 20 expert presentations on EV/PHEV market development; vehicle safety design and build; charging and electrical grid infrastructure; emergency response; and support services and user requirements for standards and code development. During day two, all Summit attendees will engage in focused workgroups to identify progress and potential gaps in standards and code development. A final report outlining the group’s recommendations will be developed and published for distribution to all relevant stakeholders.
Featured events at this year’s Summit include a keynote presentation titled, “Electrified Vehicle Safety Integration,” by Dr. Robert Lange, Principal and Vice President of Exponent, Inc. and a Welcome Reception including a Chevy Volt Safety Demonstration/Walk Through and tours of the GM On-Star Command Center.
