Galen E. Ressler Honored With SAE International Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 11, 2012 - Galen E. Ressler, GM Technical Fellow, Battery System Safety, was presented with a Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award from SAE International during their 2012 World Congress held in Detroit.

Established in 1953, this award recognizes individuals for outstanding service in the technical committee activities of the Society. This includes unusual leadership in the activities of an SAE International technical committee, significant contributions as a representative of the Society to the accomplishments of technical committees of other organizations or agencies, and outstanding contributions to SAE International technical committee work in the form of research, test methods and procedures and/or development of standards.

Ressler was recognized for his role as an instrumental leader in the emerging area of battery safety, and leadership of the SAE International Battery Safety Standards Task Force since 2010.

Under his leadership and oversight, the force successfully developed and published SAE J2929, “Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion Battery System Safety Standard for Lithium based Rechargeable Cells.” The standard provides a common foundation from which all battery and vehicle manufacturers can base critical safety requirements for battery safety.

In 2011, the committee continued to work on further revisions of the standard to include additional areas related to thermal propagation, flammability, toxicity, EMC and impact resistance.

Ressler is an active participant in SAE International, acting as a representative of battery standards work at public and industry forums, including the SAE World Congress and The Battery Show Conference.
