SAE Aero Design West Competition Set for Fort Worth, TX
FORT WORTH, TX, June 10, 2004 - Forty-four (44) collegiate teams from thirty-seven (37) universities are preparing to compete in the SAE 2004 Aero Design West Competition. Registered teams include students from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The event will be held June 18-20 at the Fort Worth Thunderbirds' Airfield in Fort Worth, Texas.
The competition, the second of two aerospace events that are part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series, will be hosted by the Lockheed Martin Corporation in association with the Fort Worth Thunderbirds Radio Control Association, Inc.
This event is the culmination of a hands-on education process which has challenged teams to design and build an unmanned aerospace vehicle (UAV) that can take flight under its own power and is capable of carrying additional weight. The competition is an exciting way to provide students with real-world skills by encouraging teamwork and transferring engineering concepts to actual vehicle application.
The first day of the competition will be held at the Green Oaks Hotel in Fort Worth and will consist of a safety inspection of each aircraft and a formal design presentation by each team, closed to the public. On Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20, the event moves outdoors to the Fort Worth Thunderbirds' Field for competitive flight tests, open to the public, as follows:
Saturday, June 19th - 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 12:30 AM to 5:00 PM
Sunday, June 20th - 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon (award ceremony to follow)
Editors Note: Accredited journalists are encouraged to attend. Aero Design West provides a wonderful opportunity for education & technology news and human interest stories. Interview options are plentiful and the competition provides great visuals capturing photo and video images.
