Gary Shrimpling Writes Award-Winning SAE Paper on Automotive Lubricants

Warrendale, Pa., July 15, 2004 -

Gary Shrimpling, a Senior Software Engineer at Ricardo Inc. of Burr Ridge, Illinois, has been selected as a recipient of the 2003 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Award for Research on Automotive Lubricants for his paper, "Journal Bearing Analysis in Engines Using Simulation Techniques" (SAE Paper # 2003-01-0245). He will be presented the award on Tuesday, October 26 at 1 p.m. during the SAE Powertrain & Fluid Systems Conference at the Tampa Marriott Waterside in Tampa, Florida.

The award, established in 1986, annually recognizes the authors of the best paper relating to the adaptation of lubricants and lubricated automotive systems or components presented at a Society meeting. This year's chosen paper, written by Shrimpling and fellow author and award recipient Dr. Sanjay Gulwadi, formerly of Ricardo Inc., describes the features and capabilities of a tool developed for analyzing journal bearings in internal combustion engines.

Shrimpling has dedicated his engineering career to the area of Finite Element analysis and works at Ricardo Inc. to integrate FE techniques into the mechanical simulation of pistons and bearings in reciprocating engines. His award winning research was a culmination of efforts to leverage FE techniques to provide the structural flexibility data that is key to accurate prediction of elasto-hydrodynamic effects. Shrimpling has been an associate member of SAE for more than seven years and is a 15-year associate member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers of the U.K.

Currently a resident of Lockport, Illinois, Shrimpling holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Hertfordshire, England.
