Middle School Students Set to Take Part in SAE International's AWIM Motorized Toy Car Competition at Cobo Center in Detroit

WARRENDALE, Pa., March 31, 2014 - More than 150 middle school students from Detroit area schools will participate in the 3rd Annual A World In Motion® (AWIM) International Motorized Toy Car Competition, Tuesday, April 8 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in Hall B (Macomb Hall), Cobo Center, Detroit.

The Motorized Toy Challenge, which is hosted by SAE International and sponsored by Honeywell, is set up as a friendly competition where students (in Engineering Design Teams of three or four) compete in a variety of engineering design competitions that demonstrate the classroom-based AWIM experience they have engaged in for the weeks leading up to the competition.

“We very much appreciate the support that Honeywell provides in helping to make this important student competition a success,” Chris Ciuca, Director of Pre-Professional Programs, SAE International, said. “The International Motorized Toy Car Competition is unique in that it enables students, teachers and volunteers to come together and share their engineering skills and knowledge.”

“Honeywell is committed to supporting the World in Motion curriculum with employee volunteers who have championed the Honeywell Student Automotive Design Challenge for six years now, as well as by helping SAE International extend the scope of these math and science programs to local schools through the Motorized Toy Car Competition,” said Honeywell Transportation Systems Chief Technology Officer Karl-Heinz Bauer. “We aim to inspire classrooms and show the more than 2,000 kids we have worked with around the world that the knowledge they acquire from their studies can be applied in a fun way. We see this program as an opportunity to perhaps inspire the next generation of automotive engineers and technology professionals.”

The schools scheduled to participate include:

- Archdiocese of Detroit – St. Edith School

       - Detroit Public Schools – Burton International Academy

- Detroit Public Schools – Keidan
