Thomas L. McKinley Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 22, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Dr. Thomas L. McKinley was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow.  McKinley was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.


McKinley is chief engineer for Cummins, Inc. where he leads systems engineering and validation efforts for heavy, medium, and light-duty engine lines.

He is active in SAE as a session organizer, journal editor, author, and presenter. He also has published ten papers and five journal articles covering topics of engine performance simulation, second law analysis, in-cylinder flow and combustion modeling, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler acid condensation, two-phase flow in vapor compression cycles, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system modeling, and model predictive control.

He serves on the board of directors for his International Council on Systems Engineering chapter, founded an endowed scholarship in mechanical engineering at Purdue University and co-funded an endowed scholarship in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois.

McKinley has received an Industrial Staff Member Appointment to Los Alamos National Lab, the Cummins Six Sigma Chairman’s Award, and the Cummins awards for outstanding problem-solving project leadership and community involvement. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a doctorate degree from the University of Illinois.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
