Huei Peng Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 22, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Dr. Huei Peng was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Peng was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.

Peng is a professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan where his current research includes design and control of electrified vehicles and connected/automated vehicles.

Peng specializes in research on adaptive control and optimal control and its application to vehicular and transportation systems. He was involved in the design of several military and civilian concept vehicles, including Future Tactical Truck system, family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, Eaton/Fedex, and Super-High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle for both electric and hydraulic hybrid concepts.

He is the U.S. director of the Department of Energy (DOE)-sponsored Clean Energy Research Center - Clean Vehicle Consortium, which supports research projects related to the development of clean vehicles in U.S. and China. He also leads an educational project funded by DOE to develop 10 undergraduate and graduate courses including three laboratories courses focusing on transportation electrification. Peng is the associate director of the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center. He has more than 230 technical publications, including 100 in referred journals and transactions, and three books.

Peng received the National Science Foundation Career award in 1998 and he is an American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Fellow. He is a ChangJiang Scholar at the Tsinghua University of China. He received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
