Thomas G. Stephens Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 22, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Thomas G. Stephens was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Stephens was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.

 

Stephens is retired from General Motors, having most recently served as Vice Chair and Global Chief Technology Officer and Vice Chairman of Global Product Operations.

Stephens started his career with GM in 1969. His tenure at the company includes stints as a Junior Engineer at the Cadillac Motor Car Division, Senior Staff Engineer of Transmissions and Powertrain controls in the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac Powertrain Division, Plant Manager at the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac Powertrain Livonia Engine Plant, Vice President of Engineering for GM Powertrain, Vice President and Group Director of Engineering Operations for the GM Truck Group, Group Vice President for GM Global Powertrain, and Executive Vice President of GM Global Powertrain and Global Quality.

He is currently vice chairman of the Board of FIRST in Michigan Robotics and chairman of the board of the Michigan Science Center. He is a licensed professional engineer and served for more than a decade on both the University of Michigan Engineering Advisory Council and on the Board of Directors for FIRST Robotics. Stephens was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2007 and has bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
