Saeed D. Barbat Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 24, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Dr. Saeed D. Barbat was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Barbat was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.

 

Barbat is the executive technical leader for safety at Ford and a member of Ford’s Technology Advisory Board, overseeing vehicle safety research, advanced product development and company-wide regulations. He has 30 years of experience in the automotive and aircraft industries, and academia.

He holds Fellow Grade in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and serves as the chairman of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) WG4 for Virtual Testing. Barbat is also involved with the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR) Safety Technical Leadership Council, ASME and SAE Crashworthiness and Biomechanics Symposiums, and is an editorial board member of the International Journal of Crashworthiness, International Journal of Vehicle Safety, and Human Modeling and Simulation Committee. He holds more than 27 patents and has written nearly 60 technical papers.

Barbat has received the Henry Ford Technology Award, the 2010 Arch T. Colwell Merit Award from SAE, nine SAE Recognition Awards, and three USCAR Awards.

He has a doctorate in applied mechanics from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Baghdad.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
