Lyle M. Pickett Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 24, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Dr. Lyle M. Pickett was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Pickett was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.


Pickett is a distinguished member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories’ Combustion Research Facility, in Livermore, California. He started the Engine Combustion Network, which is an international experimental and modeling collaboration dedicated to the improvement of engine Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes. His research expertise is in spray combustion, operating a combustion vessel at conditions typical of engines. He has authored more than 60 publications and three book chapters.

Pickett has been the recipient of SAE’s John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines as lead author of the paper, Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems, he also received the W.R. Marshall best paper award, SAE Excellence in Oral Presentation Award, SAE Harry L. Horning Award for best technical paper in engine combustion, SAE Russell S. Springer Award for best paper for young researchers, SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Award for outstanding technical paper, Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Engine Combustion Research and Development award, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Internal Combustion Engines Conference best paper award.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all in mechanical engineering.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
