WARRENDALE, Pa., April 24, 2014 -

SAE International is announcing that Masatami Takimoto was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Takimoto was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.

Takimoto is an advisor to the Toyota Motor Corporation and the CEO of Toyota’s Central Research and Development Laboratory.

He started his career at Toyota in 1970 in Toyota’s Engine Engineering Department, where he led the development of Toyota’s A type engines for 12 years. He was the first lead engineer to work with the Japan Automotive Manufacturers Association, which led to the creation of the first fuel economy regulations in Japan. As a director at Toyota, Takimoto was responsible for future powertrain technology.

He was instrumental in the development of the advanced mechanical twin cam, low pollution double overhead camshaft (DOHC) system, which was the foundation for Toyota’s global engine architecture. Takimoto has authored two technical publications on engine development and two journal papers on the future prospect of fuel cells and the potential for global commercialization of fuel cell vehicles. He has 55 patents related his engine development work.

Takimoto is a 40-year member of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan. He graduated from Kyoto University with a bachelor’s and master in engineering.
