SAE International Seeks Aerospace Engineers for Additive Manufacturing Standards Committee

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 9, 2014 -

Recognizing that additive manufacturing is an emerging technology within the aerospace industry, SAE International is seeking additional participants for its task group  which is discussing standardization approaches for process-dependent metallic materials.

The SAE International Additive Manufacturing Task Group will meet at 7:00pm on Wednesday evening, September 24 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Mich. Aerospace engineering professionals with an interest in additive manufacturing are welcome to participate.

Emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing and friction stir welding utilize process-sensitive metallic materials. When used in structural aerospace applications, these materials are subject to unique regulatory requirements.  Existing standards and specifications developed for additive metallic materials do not appear to address aerospace requirements for statistically‑substantiated A & B basis design values.

To address these issues, the task group meeting will feature two speakers discussing additive manufacturing lessons learned and regulatory requirements:

·         Jeff Calcaterra, Principle Materials Engineer, U.S. Air Force

·         Mark Freisthler, Aerospace Engineer, Transport Airplane Directorate, FAA

In addition to this task force meeting, SAE International’s Aerospace Materials Specifications (AMS) Metals Group technical committees dealing with titanium and high temperature nickel alloys will meet in Grand Rapids.  AMS-G, Titanium, Beryllium, & Refractory Metals, holds its meeting at 8 a.m. Sept. 24 and AMS-F, Corrosion and Heat Resisting Alloys, will meet at 8 a.m. on Sept. 25.

Anyone interested in participating in the SAE International Additive Manufacturing Task Group or AMS Metals Group Technical Committee Meetings, or would like to learn more about them, contact Laura Feix, Aerospace Standards Engineer, SAE International, at or +1-724-799-9198.
