Truck and Bus Aerodynamics and Fuel Economy Committee Seeks User Feedback for Revised SAE J1321 Standard

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 11, 2014 -

SAE International is seeking feedback on its fuel consumption test procedure standard, SAE J1321, which was revised and published by the organization’s Truck and Bus Aerodynamics and Fuel Economy Committee in 2012.

The standard outlines standards and procedures for truck and bus fuel testing.

“We are reaching out to users of SAE J1321 - Fuel Consumption Test Procedure - Type II and those who utilize test procedure data,” said committee member Richard Wood. “This will include the government, OEMs, manufacturers, test site, fleets, owner-operators, and trucking organizations.

Wood said some testing organizations continue to offer both the old and new versions of J1321 to customers.  “We want to make sure people understand what changes were made and what they mean,” Wood said.

The newly revised standard has clear differences from the original document. A comparison of the two can be found at:

“One of our areas of interest is for people conducting tests for other entities to share the percentage of use for each version of the document,” Wood said. “We want to clarify that, but from the SAE International perspective, one of the most important things we can do is make sure those performing the testing are not using the old version of J1321.”

The revised, 2012 version of J1321 improves the data quality collected at the same costs of the older version.

Individuals or entities wishing to provide feedback on J1321 should contact Jana Wright, Ground Vehicle Standards Specialist, SAE International, at jwright@sase.org.

SAE International plans to hold webinars to educate users on the standards, its benefits and proper techniques for use. All training times, as of now TBD, will be posted on the committee home page at http://www.sae.org/servlets/works/committeeHome.do?comtID=TETCTV4
