Vehicle Safety Strategies the Subject of New SAE International Live Webcast

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 14, 2015 -

SAE International offers a new, live 60-minute presentation that explores how certain materials and innovative designs can be used to help vehicles pass Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) overlap crashworthiness tests.

Sponsored by Dow, “Safety Strategy: Small Overlap IIHS Crashworthiness and Countermeasures” will be held on Thursday, May 14 at 10 a.m. (EDT)

Since the IIHS began its small overlap frontal crash test consumer information test program in 2012, more than a dozen automakers have redesigned their vehicles to improve test performance. The strategies evident in these redesigns have included: reinforcement of the occupant compartment, use of energy-absorbing fender structures, and the addition of engagement structures to induce vehicle lateral translation. Each strategy influences vehicle kinematics, posing challenges for the restraint systems

During the presentation, an IIHS senior research engineer will give an overview of the small overlap frontal crash-testing program, including test results and countermeasure solutions, and a Dow Automotive Systems chief engineer will offer insight into the application of innovative BETAMATE™ epoxy adhesive bonding that could enable automotive manufacturers with alternative design options to further improve the mass and cost efficiency of the countermeasure solutions.

Speakers will include:

·         Becky Mueller, Senior Research Engineer, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety - Mueller worked briefly as a contractor to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2009-2010 on projects related to future car safety regulations and prototype dummies. Since joining the IIHS in 2011, her projects have focused on crashworthiness and biomechanics as well as front and side crash protection, future dummies, and injury biomechanical criteria.

·         Mansour Mirdamadi, Chief Engineer, Dow Automotive Systems – Mansour Mirdamadi has global responsibility for engineering and application development for Dow Automotive Systems products. He has expertise in design, engineering analysis, and methodology development for body structures and lightweight solutions.
