New SAE International Presentation Explore the Use of Aluminum Extrusions in Automotive Lightweighting

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 14, 2015 -

SAE International offers a new webcast presentation that explores aluminum extrusion in automotive lightweighting.

Sponsored by Aluminum Extruders Council, “Beyond Basics: Recent Developments in the Use of Aluminum Extrusion in Automotive Lightweighting” will be held Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. EDT.

As aluminum and aluminum extrusions find their way into more and more vehicles, engineers are becoming increasingly familiar with the basics of designing with extrusions. At the same time, the limits defined by “the basics” are being stretched in the drive for higher performance and more creative solutions.

This webinar will explore how four key extrusion design variables – alloy selection and management, part geometry, tolerancing, and fabrication and joining – are being pushed to yield innovative solutions. Several mini case studies illustrating such “stretches” will be presented focusing on:

  • Non-traditional alloys (e.g. 5xxx series)
  • Complex bent components
  • Joining solutions

Attendees will be invited to ask questions during the webinar’s Q&A segment.

Speaker for the webcast will be:

·         Rob Nelson, Sales Manager, Almag Aluminum, and AEC Automotive Team Member
