SAE International Honors Richard Schumacher with the Ralph K. Hillquist NVH Lifetime Achievement Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Nov. 17, 2015 - SAE International honors Richard F. Schumacher, (retired) General Motors (GM) Proving Grounds, Noise and Vibration Laboratory, with the Ralph K. Hillquist NVH Lifetime Achievement Award.

Established, in 2012, this award recognizes those individuals who have shown a continued contribution to Ground Vehicle Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) over a period of 15 years or more. The award is intended to recognize not only the professional, but also the personal qualities of the individual. He or she should be someone who is supportive of others in the profession and who has played a key role in the development of others in the field. It honors Ralph Hillquist, the founder of the Noise & Vibration Conference and recognize his achievements and contributions to the NVH community, to recognize individuals who, like Mr. Hillquist, have an outstanding record of contributions to the field of NVH, and to enhance the image of the field.

During his time with GM, Mr. Schumacher worked with Mr. Hillquist to organize the Noise Measurement Workshop that has become the SAE Noise and Vibration Conference. After several years in interior noise control including committee work on the SAE Heat and Sound Insulation Committee, his work evolved to exterior noise measurements, including refining the noise test procedures with the SAE Light Vehicle Exterior Noise Committee, SAE Specialized Vehicle and Equipment Sound Level Committee, SAE Tire Noise Standards Committee, SAE Heavy Truck Sound Level Standards Committee as well as the SAE Instrumentation Standards Committee and Signaling (Horn) Standards Committee.

In 1993, as a member of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) Acoustic Committee, Mr. Schumacher was selected to represent the AAMA at the ISO Working Group (WG) on Road Vehicle Noise, becoming Convenor. Supported by a number of countries, he aided in the development of an update for the ISO test procedures for passenger cars and trucks which recognized the unique characteristics with automatic transmissions. That procedure was accepted by the United Nations for their global vehicle regulation.

Also during his years at GM, Mr. Schumacher was a trustee and earned the GM Chairman’s Community Service Award and SAE McFarland Award. He has authored and co-authored several papers on the instrumentation system verification, exterior noise test procedures and vehicle test procedures. Since retirement, Mr. Schumacher formed a consulting company to provide support for acoustic and regulatory issues, focusing on the SAE International and ISO vehicle and road surface requirements. He earned a BS from Western Michigan in 1965.
