Dr. Mark P. B. Musculus of Sandia National Laboratories Named SAE International Fellow
WARRENDALE, Pa., May 26, 2016 - SAE International announced that Dr. Mark P. B. Musculus was elected as a 2015-2016 SAE Fellow. Dr. Musculus was one of 18 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2016 SAE World Congress, April 12-14 in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Musculus was recognized as an SAE Fellow for his pioneering research on in-cylinder processes of conventional and low-temperature combustion direct-injection engines and the international leadership he has brought to the field. His contributions are providing both a new understanding of the fundamental in-cylinder processes of low-temperature combustion as well as new laser/imaging diagnostic techniques for optical engine research.
Dr. Musculus received a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. For the past 16 years he has led the heavy-duty and low-temperature optical diesel engine combustion program at the Combustion Research Facility. He is currently a distinguished member of technical staff at the Combustion Research Facility of Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California.
He is an associate editor for the SAE Journal of Engines, and the SAE Engine and Automotive Engineering Section of the Journal Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering. He is the Chair of SAE's Engine Combustion Committee after serving as Vice Chair since 2014. He has been the organizer for the Combustion in CI Engines session at the SAE International Congress for over a decade, and has also served as lead organizer for the Diagnostics and Measurements and Combustion in Gaseous-Fueled Engines Sessions of SAE PF&L conferences.
Dr. Musculus has been the recipient of numerous SAE International awards, including SAE Forest R. McFarland Award (2015), SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines (2015), ASME Best Paper Award - Fall Technical Conference (2014), SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines (2011), SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Award (2012), SAE Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award (2008), and ASME Best Paper Award - Fall Technical Conference (2009).
SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
