Governor to Address SAE World Congress International Networking Reception
WARRENDALE, PA,, March 3, 2005 - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today confirmed that she will be the keynote speaker at the International Networking Reception, a featured event of the upcoming 2005 SAE International World Congress sponsored by GM.
The International Networking Reception represents a global platform that gathers business leaders, SAE members and media from around the world during the Society of Automotive Engineers' annual conference, set April 11-14 in Cobo Center , Detroit , MI . Last year, almost 50 nations were represented at the event.
The governor's appearance emphasizes her continued support of an economic-growth plan introduced last year that, among other strategies, increases the state's presence as a competitor in world markets.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation was instrumental in securing the governor's World Congress appearance. The MEDC, a partnership between the state and local communities, promotes economic growth by developing strategies and providing services to create and retain premium jobs and a high quality of life.
Michigan ranks 8th in the nation for number of employees supported by U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies, according to the Organization for International Investment. It is estimated that these companies are responsible for the creation of almost a quarter-million jobs, providing the primary source of income for more than five percent of Michigan 's private-sector workforce.
More than half of these jobs are in manufacturing industries. Total foreign direct investment by U.S. subsidiaries totaled $82 billion in 2003, more than double the amount in the previous year.
The SAE 2005 World Congress will also be a celebration of the Society's 100 th anniversary. This year's SAE president is J. E. Ted Robertson, PE. Jim Queen, GM Vice President of Global Engineering, and the World Congress general chairman, leads the OEM and Supplier Industry Leadership Coalition providing support and participation. The SAE World Congress annually draws more than 35,000 attendees and nearly 1,000 exhibitors over the four-day period.
