Counterfeit electronic parts: Manufacture of and avoidance

If a counterfeit electronic part is installed in critical technology such as aircraft, spacecraft, or missiles, the consequences can be quite drastic. The equipment or the product could quit working or not work when needed or fail when put under stress. The cost to replace counterfeit electronic parts can be quite expensive as the Missile Defense Agency testified in November 2011 at the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) hearing on counterfeit electronic parts in the Department of Defense (DoD) supply chain: the cost to replace suspect counterfeit memory devices in the THAAD missiles was $2.7 million. Counterfeit Electronic Parts and Their Impact on Supply Chains

The book also presents a high-level compilation of supply chain best practices identified in a survey of electronic parts manufacturers and government contractors.

It is a must-read for those interested in a comprehensive review of the challenge of counterfeit electronic parts and the consequences of their use in both consumer and industrial products.

SAE Standards

AS5553B Counterfeit Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition

This standard was originally created in response to a significant and increasing volume of EEE parts entering the aerospace supply chain, posing significant performance, reliability and safety risks. This document has subsequently been expanded to address counterfeit risk mitigation on a global scale across multi-sector electronic supply chain industries and to provide uniform requirements, practices and methods to mitigate the risks of receiving and installing counterfeit EEE parts.

AS6174A Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel

This SAE Standard standardizes practices to: a. maximize availability of authentic materiel, b. procure materiel from reliable sources, c. assure authenticity and conformance of procured materiel, including methods such as certification, traceability, testing and inspection appropriate to the commodity/item in question, d. control materiel identified as fraudulent/counterfeit, e. and report suspect or confirmed fraudulent/counterfeit materiel to other potential users and Authority Having Jurisdiction.

ARP6328 Guideline for Development of Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition Systems

This document contains guidance for implementing a counterfeit mitigation program in accordance with AS5553. The information contained in this document is intended to supplement the requirements of a higher level quality standard (e.g., AS9100) and other quality management system documents.
