SAE International Honors Airlines for America Executive Robert Ireland with Marvin Whitlock Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 4, 2017 - SAE International announces that Robert Ireland, Managing Director, Engineering and Maintenance at Airlines for America, is the 2017 recipient of the Marvin Whitlock Award.

Ireland received the award during the SAE AeroTech Congress and Exhibition, recently held in Fort Worth, Texas.

In his A4A role with Airlines for America, Ireland coordinates engineering and maintenance interfaces between member airlines and an array of government entities. He served United Airlines from 1981-2011, originally as a staff engineer, leading their participation in the development of industry-standard wind shear training techniques teaming with Boeing, Douglas, Lockheed and NCAR, as well as SAE Committee S-7. He held a variety of positions, retiring in 2011 as Managing Director, Flight Center Operations.

Ireland earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Princeton University, majoring in Aerospace Engineering and Secondary Education, and remains an active alumni volunteer.

In addition to his duties with Airlines for America, Ireland serves as Vice President Aerospace for SAE International. He also has been a member of the SAE Foundation Board of Trustees, SAE Finance Committee, SAE Technical Standards Board, and the SAE Aerospace Council.

The Marvin Whitlock Award annually recognizes individuals for significant technical contributions and/or innovation related to operational availability of aircraft. Operational availability includes areas such as repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification and safety. The award acknowledges and commemorates the distinctive management contributions of the late Marvin Whitlock, Senior Vice President-Maintenance and a member of the Board of Directors of United Air Lines.
