SAE International and CARA Charities Team for Seat Belt Safety

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 4, 2006 - May is a month that is dedicated to keeping everyone safe in a vehicle – from the smallest baby to the professional race car driver who speeds around the track in excess of 200 mph.

National Safe Kids Week (May 6-13) and Buckle Up America Week (May 22-29) are designed to remind everyone of the importance of seat belt safety and properly securing passengers. CARA Charities and SAE International have created programs to help drive this message home.

Founded in 1981, Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary (CARA) Charities has benefited numerous children's hospitals, scholarships, Champ Car and IRL Ministries. Its "Buckle Up Baby" children's car seat program, which is supported by Bridgestone/Firestone Trust, provides funds for infant car seats to needy families in major cities where open wheel races are held.

SAE International's "Booster Seat Campaign," in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provides the necessary tools to help teach young children and their parents about the importance of booster seat safety. Studies have shown that an adult seat belt is not safe for children less than 4 feet, 9 inches tall. The booster seat lifts them so that the seat belt fits properly.
