McCarthy Wins SAE International Standards Award for Work in Emission Control

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 17, 2006 - Michael McCarthy of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) was selected to receive SAE International’s Henry Souther Standards Award.  He will be presented the award at the On-Board Diagnostics Symposium: 2006 Update, September 12-14, 2006 in  Toulouse, France.

The award, established in 2001, acknowledges accomplishments in standards development in the areas of environmental studies, safety, materials, testing and emissions.

McCarthy is manager of the Advanced Engineering section at CARB.  He has been involved in the automotive emission control field since 1992, primarily working on CARB’s On-Board Diagnostics programs for on-road vehicles.  He has worked closely with SAE International task forces to develop standards for emission-related OBD systems.  He has participated in similar activities through the International Organization for Standardization. 

McCarthy received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the  University  of  California, Los Angeles.
