SAE International to Host Aero Design West 2007 in Van Nuys

WARRENDALE, Pa., March 16, 2007 - Original-design model aircraft, scratch-built by some of North America’s top collegiate engineering students, will take to the air over Van Nuys on March 24 and 25 as SAE International’s Collegiate Design Series returns to Southern California.

Aero Design West 2007, which will host 40 college teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico, includes technical judging and flight competitions. The model planes lift as much as 50 pounds in the payload competition.

The competition is hosted by the San Fernando Valley R/C Flyers model club and will be held at the model airplane facility – Apollo XI Field – at 6201 Woodley Blvd., Los Angeles.

Aero Design West is one of nine annual educational competitions hosted throughout the United States by SAE International, the world’s pre-eminent society for establishing standards for the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries. The events challenge students to design and build vehicles – airplanes, open-wheel race cards, Baja-style vehicles and snowmobiles – for competitions that require meeting specific engineering challenges.

Aero Design West will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 24 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 25. The event is open to the public.
