SAE Recognizes Boeing Engineer as Outstanding AWIM´┐Ż Volunteer

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 17, 2007 - John DeRosiaJohn DeRosia of The Boeing Company has been selected to receive SAE International’s Bill Agnew Award for Outstanding AWIM® Volunteers.  He will be presented the award at the SAE Board of Directors meeting in Seattle, July 18.

The award, established in 2003, recognizes volunteers active in SAE International’s A World In Motion® program.  More commonly known as AWIM, the program is designed to increase interest in math and science in the classroom.  The award honors Dr. William G. Agnew, a retiree from General Motors Research Laboratories who has supported AWIM since its inception in 1996.

The SAE Foundation funds this award.  In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

During his 21-year career at Boeing, DeRosia has worked in the areas of wing structures, primary flight controls, engineering design, and computing support and airplane certification.  He has led the AWIM volunteer program at Boeing for 15 years.  Under his leadership, Boeing volunteers have extended their reach from four schools to 36 schools and 111 classrooms.

DeRosia, whose interest in airplanes started at an early age when he witnessed a Boeing 747 land in Frankfurt, Germany, views the AWIM program as an opportunity to share his passion for engineering with future engineers.

His interest in working with young people also led to DeRosia's involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters.  He has been a volunteer with the mentoring program for four years.

DeRosia earned his bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Central Florida.  He resides in Everett, Wash.
