Vehicle Suspension Engineer Receives SAE Award for Research

WARRENDALE, Pa., June 7, 2007 - Barney Gerrard Barney Gerrard is the recipient of SAE International's Arch T. Colwell Merit Award. He was presented the award during the SAE 2007 World Congress.

This award, established in 1965, annually recognizes the authors of outstanding papers presented at an SAE or SAE section meeting. The late Arch T. Colwell, who first funded this award, served SAE International in many capacities for nearly 50 years, including a term as President in 1941.

The SAE Foundation now funds this award. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

Gerrard is recognized for his paper, "The Equivalent Elastic Mechanism: A Tool for the Analysis and the Design of Compliant Suspension Linkages" (SAE paper #2005-01-1719).

Gerrard is a freelance vehicle suspension engineer currently working with Tier 1 suspension supplier Magneti Marelli in the Suspension Systems Division in Turin, Italy. At Magneti Marelli, he is involved with a small innovation team tasked with creating new concepts for passenger car suspension architectures, and taking them from initial proof-of-concept studies to on-track testing demonstrations.

Prior to working at Magneti Marelli, Gerrard was a suspension design engineer for Randle Engineering Solutions in Warwick, U.K. He also worked in the chassis analysis department at Jaguar Cars and in an undergraduate apprentice program at Ford Motor Company, both in the U.K.

Gerrard has six published documents. A six-year member of SAE International, he has been honored with the Longtime Member Service Award and two Outstanding Oral Presentation Awards from the SAE Engineering Meetings Board. He is also a member of Associazione Tecnica dell'Automobile.

Gerrard earned his bachelor's and master's in engineering from Durham University, U.K. He resides in Copenhagen, Denmark.
