Johnston, Marsden and Meleck Receive SAE Award for Outstanding Technical Committee Service

WARRENDALE, Pa., Nov. 20, 2007 - Paul Johnston, James Marsden and Mike Meleck are recipients of SAE International's Technical Standards Board Outstanding Contribution Award. They were presented the award during the SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress & Exhibition in Rosemont, Ill.

This award, established in 1953, recognizes individuals for outstanding service on SAE International's technical committees.

The SAE Foundation funds this award. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

Johnston, Marsden and Meleck were honored for their work on SAE International's Truck & Bus Council.

Paul Johnston Paul Johnston
Johnston is Senior Director of Compression and Braking at Meritor WABCO, a joint venture between ArvinMeritor and WABCO, in Troy, Mich. He is responsible for application engineering, product planning and new product development.

Previously at ArvinMeritor, Johnston was Senior Director of the North American Foundation Brake Business Unit and Worldwide Director of Product Engineering for the CVS Worldwide Braking Division. He has 38 years of experience in commercial vehicle air and hydraulic braking systems and products.

A member of SAE International, Johnston is active in the Truck & Bus Council, Truck & Bus Brake Committee and related subcommittees to develop new brake products and system recommended practices. He is also involved in the SAE Commercial Vehicle Congress & Exhibition as a session organizer, moderator and presenter. In addition to SAE International, Johnston is chairman and member of the Heavy Duty Brake Manufacturers Council, a technical council of the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association. He also has been active in the Technology & Maintenance Council and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance regarding technical products and commercial vehicle practices.

Johnston holds a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Ohio Northern University, a master's in mechanical engineering from Cleveland State University and a master's in business administration from Baldwin Wallace College. He resides in Troy, Mich.

James Marsden James Marsden
Marsden is a staff engineer for the controls group at Volvo Powertrain in Hagerstown, Md. He is responsible for the on-board diagnostics of engines and related powertrain components used in Volvo and Mack trucks.

Marsden has worked for Volvo Powertrain, previously Mack Trucks Powertrain, for 38 years. Most recently, his focus has been on electronic communications and the design of engine controls using SAE International standards. He also worked in the areas of stress analysis, large castings and fuel injection systems, and electronic controls for diesel engines. He is one of several contributors to a U.S. patent on electronic control of a diesel engine. He is also a member of SAE International.

Marsden holds a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Bucknell University. He resides in Hagerstown, Md.

Mike Meleck Mike Meleck
Meleck is an Original Equipment Manufacturer Account and Product Manager for Phillips and Temro Industries in Eden Prairie, Minn. He has 10 years of experience in the trucking and automotive industry, specifically working on vehicle electrification and cold weather operations.

Previously, Meleck spent 12 years in the aerospace industry, where he worked on avionics system design and electrical systems interfaces on military fighter and helicopter platforms. He is the author of two publications and he holds two U.S. patents, with two pending, in the area of truck electrification. He is also a member of SAE International and the Technology & Maintenance Council.

Meleck holds a bachelor's in aerospace engineering at Red River College in Winnipeg, Canada. He resides in Chaska, Minn.
