John J. Goglia Receives 2001 SAE Marvin Whitlock Award

Warrendale, PA,, Jan. 13, 2003 - John J. Goglia, a Member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), has received the 2001 SAE Marvin Whitlock Award. Goglia received the award during a banquet ceremony at the 2002 Department of Defense Maintenance Symposium in October 2002.

This award, established in 1988, honors individuals for outstanding management accomplishment that has resulted in superior aviation maintenance integrity of airline, fixed base, corporate, or military aircraft. It acknowledges and commemorates the distinctive management contributions of the late Marvin Whitlock, Senior Vice President-Maintenance and a member of the Board of Directors of United Air Lines.

With more than 30 years experience in the aviation industry, Goglia is the first NTSB Board Member to hold a Federal Aviation Administration aircraft mechanic's certificate. As a Board Member, Goglia's area of specialty has been transportation safety; he has leveraged his extensive airline background to increase safety awareness at the maintenance level in aviation. Importantly, he has played a key role in focusing international attention on the increasing significance of aircraft maintenance in aviation accidents.

Goglia has participated in a number of air, rail and bus accident investigations while serving as an NTSB Board Member. He chaired the Board's public hearings on the ValuJet crash into the Florida Everglades, among others. Goglia has also instituted intern/partner assignments at the NTSB, including airline engineers and manufacturers' personnel in his staff for extended periods of time.

Prior to becoming an NTSB Board Member, Goglia held numerous positions within the airline industry and served more than 20 years as a union flight safety representative on accident investigation teams. For 12 years, he operated his own aircraft service company. Goglia has served as the Governor's Appointee to several boards, including the Boston Area Second Airport Site Selection Board and the Massachusetts Workers Compensation Review Board.
