SAE congratulates Ford on its 100th anniversary

Troy, MI, June 16, 2003 - Mr. William Clay Ford, Jr.
Chairman and CEO
Ford Motor Company

June 16, 2003

Dear Bill,

On behalf of SAE International, its staff and its 83,000 members worldwide, we would like to send our heartiest congratulations to you and the Ford Motor Company on its 100th Anniversary today. A company that lasts for a century has to have a visionary to start it rolling, a great product to sustain it, and creative minds to enable the kind of changes required to persevere through a dynamic business environment.

While well-earned congratulations are the top order of the day, we also want to thank you for the support Ford Motor Company has given SAE from its inception in 1905. Your great-grandfather Henry Ford founded more than a great car company and a manufacturing process that changed the world. He was a founding father of the Society of Automobile Engineers - the original name behind SAE - in January 1905, and he became the inaugural Vice President of SAE. Henry Ford was one of only 30 men that founded our organization that day, but the number would grow quickly. It was the influence and the vision of Henry Ford that set us on course to approach our own centennial in 2005. You may also know that your father became a 50-year SAE member this year.

Throughout the 20th century Ford has set a benchmark for SAE involvement and activity. Ford provided our organization with no fewer than five SAE presidents. Additionally, many other SAE leaders owe their professional lineage to Ford Motor Company. Many of these leaders became household names both inside and outside of the automotive world.

Ford continues to set an example for others to follow in its visible support for the programs and mission of SAE International. From Ford engineers' participation in standards development to their mentoring of school students in our A World in Motion program; from outstanding presentations by executives like Nick Scheele and Jim Padilla to Ford's outstanding sponsorship of SAE 2004 World Congress, Ford is a cornerstone of the foundation of the continuing success of SAE now more than ever.

For 100 years, Ford Motor Company has made creativity and technical innovation a part of its corporate identity. The staff and membership of SAE International salute you, the unmatched legacy of your great-grandfather, and one of the greatest brands in world history on this landmark achievement. We wish you and the many men and women of Ford Motor Company around the globe many future successes in Ford's second century!

Our best wishes for a prosperous future,

Raymond A. Morris
SAE Executive Vice President
