Honda Engineers Receive SAE Award for Belt-Drive System Paper

WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 21, 2008 - Kazuma Okuda, Youichi Nakahara and Yasuyuki Komatsu of Honda are recipients of SAE International's Colwell Merit Award. They were honored during the SAE 2008 World Congress in Detroit .

The Colwell Merit Award, established in 1965, annually recognizes authors of outstanding papers presented at an SAE conference or section meeting. The late Arch T. Colwell, who first funded this award, served SAE International in many capacities for nearly 50 years, including a term as President in 1941.

This award is funded through the SAE Foundation. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

Okuda, Nakahara and Komatsu are being recognized for co-authoring the paper, "Research and Analysis of ISG Belt-Drive System for Idling Stop System" (SAE paper #2006-01-1501). The paper describes the team’s effort to enable a belt-driven Integrated Starter Generator to be used in an idle-stop system capable of driving the accessories and starting the engine.

About the recipients:

Kazuma Okuda
Okuda is a Design Engineer in the passenger car engine department at Honda Automobile R&D Center in Tochigi, . At the R&D Center , he designs engine accessories and is an expert on the auxiliary drive belt and auto tensioner. Okuda earned a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Tokyo Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering.

Youichi Nakahara
Nakahara is a Staff Engineer of Production Engineering in the quality control office at Honda Motor Corporation’s Kumamoto factory in Ozu-machi, . Previously, he was Assistant Chief Engineer in the Materials Research Section at Honda Automobile R&D Center. Nakahara earned a bachelor’s in energy engineering@from Oita University .

Yasuyuki Komatsu
Komatsu is a Chief Engineer at Honda Automobile R&D Center in Tochigi, , where he has led the electrical common technology development group since June 2007. He leads the development of vehicle network systems, software platforms, model-based development processes and off-board diagnostic systems. Komatsu earned a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Waseda University .
