South Dakota State University Receives Formula SAE´┐Ż Grant for Rookie Teams

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 18, 2008 - South Dakota State University's Formula SAE® team is the recipient of the William R. "Bill" Adam Formula SAE Grant for Rookie Teams. The award was presented prior to the 2008 Formula SAE West competition in Fontana, Calif.

The grant, established in 2004, provides funding to a Formula SAE rookie team to assist with the development of its project. The grant honors William R. "Bill" Adam for his contribution to the Formula SAE program and his lifelong dedication to mentoring young engineers. Adam was a member of SAE International for 35 years.

The grant is funded through the SAE Foundation.  In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

This year marked the first time that South Dakota State University ’s Wild Hare Racing Team competed in a Collegiate Design Series event. The school’s club was formed in 2006 and that year built a Baja vehicle as a club project. Out of that project was born a desire to build and compete in the Formula SAE competition.

The team, which placed 58th at the Formula SAE West competition, is led by a group of five seniors who oversee the various vehicle component groups staffed by underclassmen.
