University of Toledo Educator Earns SAE International Environmental Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 6, 2008 - Walter W. Olson, professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Toledo , is a recipient of SAE International’s John Connor Environmental Award. He was presented the award during the 2008 Government/Industry Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The award, established in 2001, recognizes the accomplishments of an individual to promote the environmental vision of SAE International. It was established to meet the demands of the ever-changing environmental challenges that face manufacturers, suppliers and professionals in the global transportation industry.

Olson is researching the development of hybrid hydraulic vehicles for commercial use including buses, delivery trucks, and construction equipment.  His other research interests include vehicle dynamics, manufacturing processes and sustainable development. Previously, he worked for the U.S. Army, where he served as Commander, USA Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Fairbanks, Ala. , until his retirement.

Olson is the author of more than 80 publications. He serves as the SAE International Engineering Meetings Board Vice Chair and previously served as Chair of the SAE Sustainable Development Program Committee and the Toledo Section of SAE.

Olson is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with dual degrees in basic (physics) and applied sciences (electrical engineering). He also received master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. He resides in Toledo, Ohio .
