Cummins Analyst to Receive SAE International Award for Contributions to Mobility Engineering

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 26, 2009 -

Rishikesh Venugopal, a Combustion CFD Analyst at Cummins Inc. in Columbus, Ind., is the recipient of SAE International's Russell S. Springer Award. He will be presented his award at the SAE 2009 World Congress Awards Ceremony held April 21 at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit.

The award, established in 1954, recognizes the author, age 36 or younger, of an original and outstanding technical paper presented at an SAE International conference that contributes to the mobility engineering profession. The award is funded through the SAE Foundation.

Venugopal will be recognized for the paper, “A Review of Fundamental Studies Relevant to Flame Lift-off in Diesel Jets” (SAE Paper # 2007-01-0134), co-authored by John Abraham. In the paper, the physical mechanisms for lift-off, and its dependence on injection pressure, injector orifice diameter, chamber temperature, and density are discussed.

Venugopal is a Combustion CFD Analyst in the Combustion Research group at Cummins, where his responsibilities include performing combustion CFD analyses to predict/optimize in-cylinder engine performance and emissions, conducting engine cycle simulations to analyze new engine architectures, and developing analytical tools to study the influences of spray characteristics and chemical kinetic mechanisms on engine performance and emissions.

Venugopal is the author of five archival journal publications, six papers in conference proceedings, and two journal papers under peer review. Last year, he presented an invited seminar on his graduate research at Sandia National Laboratories.

Venugopal holds a bachelor's of technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology–Madras and earned master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. As a student at IIT–Madras, Venugopal was awarded the Sivasailam Merit Prize and a gold medal for best individual project in mechanical engineering.
