Japikse to Receive SAE International Award for Turbomachinery Engineering

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 26, 2009 - David Japikse, owner and CEO of Concepts NREC in White River Junction, Vt., is the recipient of SAE International's Cliff Garrett Turbomachinery Engineering Award. He will be honored at the SAE 2009 World Congress Awards Ceremony held April 21 at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit.

The Cliff Garrett Award, established in 1984, recognizes an authority in turbomachinery engineering for on-highway, off-highway, spacecraft or aircraft vehicle use. SAE International administers this annual lecture to honor Cliff Garrett and the inspiration he provided as an aerospace pioneer. The award is funded by the Garrett Corp., a division of Honeywell, through the SAE Foundation. 

Japikse founded Concepts NREC in 1980 and has served as its Chairman/CEO since that time.  He also served as its President from 1980-2000. The company, an independent turbomachinery design and development organization, employs 125 people.

Japikse’s principal areas of work include the design and development of various centrifugal and axial compressors, pumps and turbine stages, including the development of design tools. His consulting and design work cover a range of pumps and compressors, turbochargers, gas turbines and air compressors.

Japikse has authored or co-authored five books and edited five others. He also has presented dozens of publications and technical papers and prepared more than 250 reports on the design, development and troubleshooting of turbomachinery. He has five patents in the field of turbomachinery.

A recipient of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Potter Gold Medal, Japikse also has been recognized by membership in the National Academy of Engineering and the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering, and has been designated by Purdue University as an Outstanding Mechanical Engineer and as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus.

Japikse received a bachelor’s in engineering from Case Institute of Technology and master’s and doctorate degrees in engineering from Purdue University. He also conducted post-doctoral research at the Technische Hochschule in Aachen, West Germany, as a Fulbright Scholar and National Science Foundation Fellow. He resides in Woolwich, Maine.
