Michigan's Governor Granholm to Take Major Role in SAE 2009 World Congress Special Opening Ceremonies

DETROIT, April 13, 2009 - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, 47th governor of Michigan, will address attendees during the special opening ceremonies of SAE 2009 World Congress set to begin at 8 a.m. April 20.

The special opening ceremonies, which kick off the four-day SAE 2009 World Congress hosted by Honda with Bosch as the Tier One Strategic Partner, are sponsored by AVL North America, Dassault Systemes, ATX Group and ESG Automotive Incorporated. California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also will have a featured role in the event.

The governors are expected to address issues critical to the future of the automotive industry and the environment.

“Governor Granholm is working on an aggressive strategy to make Michigan the advanced battery capital of the world and the home of the next generation of green vehicles powered by them. She has proposed and signed into law the most aggressive tax incentives in the nation to help companies secure a majority of the $2 billion in federal recovery funds that will enable the United States to build an advanced battery infrastructure in our country,” Gov. Granholm’s office notes.

“Michigan's tradition of automotive research and development expertise combined with its great research universities, strong manufacturing base, and skilled work force make it the perfect state for commercial-scale advanced battery design, development and manufacture. The governor's strategy is part of a comprehensive strategy to create jobs by diversifying the state's economy into four areas: renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, homeland security and defense, and life sciences,” the Michigan Governor’s office added.

The SAE 2009 World Congress, with its theme "Racing to Green Mobility," is set April 20-23 at Cobo Center. Masaaki Kato, Senior Managing Director, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and former President, Honda R&D Co., Ltd., is the General Chairman of the event and also will take part in the special opening ceremonies.

The SAE 2009 World Congress is the world's largest powertrain and safety engineering conference, offering the global automotive industry's most comprehensive technical program, featuring technical papers, SAE seminars, exhibits, the AVL Technology Leadership Theater, the FEV Powertrain Innovation Forum and the ATX-Consulting4Drive Executive Business Theater.
