Call For Papers

The L. Ray Buckendale Lecture has historically offered topics which cover a wide variety of areas in the truck and bus industries. These topics were considered and selected based on SAE members' interests to develop a lecture and/or address a perceived industry need.

The topic of total environmental impact of commercial vehicles is a challenge that is facing our industry today.

Because of the complexity of this topic, there is more content than can be covered effectively in one lecture, therefore, there will be a three-year sequence of lectures. Listed below are the topic descriptions that will be presented in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Each topic will be covered by a different individual, but coordination between lecture presenters will be facilitated by the Buckendale Committee.

Proposed Sequence of Topics

2004
Engine Emissions Development to Meet Worldwide Emission Standards

Focus on the types of emissions regulated worldwide, the certification processes required, the technologies being applied, the impact on fuels and lubricants, and the projections/implications for the future outlook. The scope will be historical up to year 2000, current 2004-2007, and future 2010 and beyond.

2005
Engine Development Process to Meet Worldwide Emission Standards

Focus is to build on the 2004 lecture on emission standards and review the challenges to the engine manufacturer on how to respond to the emissions legislation changes. The impact on the engine manufacturer regarding technology development, product development, validation as well as emissions lab support requirements for improved emissions measurement capability. The lecture offers the opportunity for teaming up two lecturers to cover both the on-road and off-road engines following a format on common and unique challenges of application requirements and impact on total system considerations.

2006
Vehicle Considerations to Address Powertrain Changes to Meet Changing Engine Emissions for EPA/EEC

Focus is on a summary of the areas of the vehicle systems which are impacted by changes in engine technology as a result of increasing challenging engine emissions standards and related legislative changes. Building from a base case of 1998 vehicle configuration and then change cycles with 2004, 2007, 2010 and beyond as the milestones of change.

As always, topics submitted outside of the proposed three-year common topic sequence will be considered for lecture topic selection.

The SAE Buckendale Committee welcomes nominations for future Lectures and suggestions for subject matter related to the basic objective of the program. Nomination and suggestions may be emailed to awards@sae.org
