Frequently Asked Questions about Nominating a Member for SAE Fellow

Below are answers to most frequently asked questions about nominating a member for SAE Fellow. If you do not see the answer you need, contact Mrs. Janiece Fecich at janiec@sae.org.

What is the Fellow Nomination submittal due date?
A Nomination must be received at SAE International on July 1, 2009 (deadline is enforced in order to give ample time to the Fellow Committee to read and judge the nominations)

Who can nominate a member for SAE Fellow?
SAE Fellow or Member grade members including members of SAE Affiliates are permitted to nominate a member.

What happens if the nominee is not a Member grade member?
The nominator will be notified and, at that time, the nominator may request the nominee be considered for a grade change. If the nominee does not qualify, the Fellow nomination will not be processed.

Can a nomination be processed if the nominee does not have 10 years of SAE membership service?
The nominator will be notified and the nomination will not be processed; however there is a special clause in the SAE Bylaws indicating that if a nominee does not meet the 10-year membership service criteria, at the discretion of the Fellow Committee the term may be reduced to a 5-year minimum if the nominator can established that the nominee was actively involved in SAE activities. Refer to Fellow Grade Qualifications.

How can a member obtain a nomination form?
A nominator must review the Fellow Nomination Tutorial. The link to obtain the current Nomination form is given.

Can the nominator tell the member they are being nominated for SAE Fellow, and can the nominee supply the nominator with background information?
Yes, a member can be told that they are being nominated. A nominee may provide background information to the nominator so that the nomination submittal is complete as well as accurate. The nominator is to submit a clearly written nomination in which anyone outside of the particular area of technical expertise is able to judge the significance of the accomplishment(s).

Must all of the support letters be from SAE members?
No, only 3 letters of support must come from a SAE member (any grade). The remaining letters may come from non-members. If 3 SAE member support letters are not submitted with the nomination, the nomination will not be processed. The nominee is not to solicit support letters for their own nomination but rather give the nominator the information to contact and obtain letters of reference.

Can the nominator act as a reference as well?
No. By preparing and submitting the nomination form, the nominator is supporting the nomination. At least three additional SAE member references must be obtained.

Must the nominee have published extensively and have obtained patents to qualify as an SAE Fellow?
No, extensive publication and/or patents are not a must to be nominated. In lieu of these items review the Judging Guideline and Nomination form plus use the Scoring Document as guides to what information should be included in the nomination.

On what basis does the Fellow Committee judge and select members for SAE Fellow?
The Fellow Committee judges solely based on the information contained in the nomination package. Key areas the Committee members will look for in a nomination are the impact of the individual's work on society in general and the impact of the individual's work on the mobility industry. Further, the Fellow Committee completes their individual scoring using the Scoring document, the same document that the nominator must complete and submit in with their nomination package.
