Description
This award, established in 2007, is administered by the Timken Award Committee and was generously funded by the Timken Company in conjunction with the SAE Transmission and Driveline Committee. The award recognizes new ideas, concepts, innovations or applications that will assist in improving this technology. Nominations from outside the U.S. are encouraged.

This award has been funded through an endowment from the Timken Compnay to honor Howard Simpson, an extremely talented and innovative engineer who has invented and developed a revolutionary planetary gear set which constituted the basis for the Ford C4 and C5 transmission produced over more than 20 years starting in 1964, for the famous Chrysler Torqueflite transmission, a ground braking unit introduced in 1956 and for several General Motors transmission models. The award is also testimony to Timken's commitment to technical innovation and creativity.

The Award
This award, established in 2007, is generously funded by the Timken Company in cooperation with the SAE Transmission and Driveline Committee and is administered by the Timken Award Committee. The recipient will be recognized as an individual and not as organization or company. The award consists of a framed certificate, medal and an honorarium and is presented at the Awards Ceremony during the SAE World Congress.

Eligibility Criteria
The nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • Individual must be an SAE member or be involved with SAE activities
  • Demonstrated significant contribution to the advancement of transmission and driveline technology
  • Recognition may be for a singular accomplishment or lifetime achievement
