Gregory E. Saunders Receives 2004 SAE Aerospace Chair Award
Warrendale, PA (June 24, 2004) - Mr. Gregory E. Saunders, Director of the Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO), has been selected to receive the 2004 Aerospace Chair Award on behalf of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He will be presented the award on November 3, 2004 during the World Aviation Congress in Reno, Nevada.
The award, established in 1997, recognizes outstanding leadership demonstrated by chairs of committees under the Aerospace Council and Air & Space Group. Saunders was chosen to receive the award along with fellow Chair of the SAE Avionic Systems Division (ASD) Douglas Gregory.
Saunders has worked diligently with the U.S. Government in the advancement of aerospace defense since 1976, where his career has advanced to the current post he assumed in 1998. During this time, he has testified before Congress, served on Defense Science Board Studies chaired by Secretary William Perry, and has been responsible for the Department of Defense's program to adopt and use standards produced by voluntary standards organizations. In his position as the Director of DSPO, he is responsible for all facets of defense standardization policies and procedures.
Saunders has served on several committees, councils and boards in addition to the SAE Aerospace Council, and operates as the U.S. representative to a NATO Board and as the Department of Defense representative on the Interagency Committee on Standards Policy. Other awards Saunders has received include such prestigious honors as the Vice President's Golden Hammer Award, the Department of Defense Civilian Service Award, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award and the American National Standards Institute Meritorious Service Award.
Saunders holds an engineering degree from the University of Evansville in Indiana.
