Christian E. Schaefer Receives 2004 SAE Thomas H. Speller Award

Warrendale, Pa. (July 8, 2004) - Christian E. Schaefer, an Associate Technical Fellow with The Boeing Company in St. Louis, Mo., has been selected to receive the 2004 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Thomas H. Speller Award. He will be presented the award during the 2004 Aerospace Manufacturing and Automated Fastening Conference & Exhibition on September 20-23 at the Sheraton West Port Hotel in St. Louis.

The award, established in 1983, recognizes remarkable achievements of an individual who, through dedicated service, tireless efforts, high ideals and vision, contributes significantly to the implementation of manufacturing processes and methodologies in the dedicated discipline of automated fastening.

Schaefer began his career in automated fastening with the McDonnell Aircraft Company in 1982 as an Equipment and Process Engineer supporting tactical aircraft production. He was also instrumental in the development and installation of all automated fastening systems currently deployed for St. Louis C-17 assembly operations. In his current position at Boeing, Schaefer specializes in Technology Integration within the department of Advanced Manufacturing Research and Development, where he works to support assembly automation initiatives. Schaefer has been recognized by Boeing for assembly cost reductions and quality improvements pertaining to automated fastening, alternative fastener use and other manufacturing support accomplishments.

As a vital member of the SAE Aerospace Automated Fastening Committee, Schaefer has held various leadership positions within the committee, currently holding the title of Eastern U.S. Vice Chair. He has also presented and co-authored Aerofast technical papers. In recognition for his outstanding planning and support of aerospace events, Mr. Schaefer received the SAE Forrest R. McFarland Award in 2002.

Schaefer holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology from Southeast Missouri State University.
