Mining OEMs and suppliers get a chance only once every four years to display new technologies and equipment at MINExpo. In this special edition of Original Equipment, some of the equipment that OEMs were eager to display at the 2000 event in Las Vegas are highlighted.
Mechanical drive wheel loader
Komatsu Mining Systems (KMS) introduced what it called the "world's largest
mechanical
drive
wheel loader." The company's 205,200-kg (452,400-lb) WA1200-3 is powered
by a 1170-kW (1560-hp) flywheel Komatsu SDA16V160 electronically controlled
engine. Its standard 20-m3 (26.2-yd3) bucket loads 220-t
(240-ton) haul trucks in six passes.
Komatsu Mining System's WA1200-3 features a tire-saver
setting that controls tire slip, preventing wear and prolonging life.
The WA1200-3's modulated clutch system offers adjustable travel speed, traction control, and tire specification settings for multiple applications. The precise dial control of travel speed setting offers the operator variable travel speeds for tight "V" cycles, decreasing cycle times, and increasing digging capabilities and tire life. The traction-control setting controls tire slip, preventing wear and prolonging tire life. The system's remote boom positioner allows the operator to set maximum and minimum bucket positions, promoting smooth component movement and preventing spillage. A closed wet disc and oil-cooled brake system enable downhill travel with full bucket loads. The machine also features a variable output hydraulic system (VOHS), a self-adjusting hydraulic system that decreases oil consumption and saves fuel.
To minimize maintenance and downtime, the WA1200-3 is equipped with a Vehicle Health Monitoring System (VHMS), an integrated maintenance system that employs self-contained diagnostics, a preventive maintenance scheduler, and downloadable machine performance history.
The machine's 6.2-m (20.3-ft) Hi-Cab operator station allows the operator a
full view of the inside of the haul truck bed. It features viscous mounts for
noise and vibration absorption and standard ROPS/FOPS cab protection, complete
with an emergency ladder. Additional features of the Hi-Cab include an Advanced
Joystick Steering System (AJSS) for steering accuracy; Electronic Controlled
Modulation Valve (ECMV) for smooth shifting at all speeds; an automatic transmission
for efficient load and carry operations; and an air conditioner, heater, and
AM/FM radio.
KMS's
introduction of the D475A-3 Super Dozer stems from the success of the larger
Komatsu D575 model. The concept behind the Komatsu-pioneered Super Dozer line
is that increased performance and productivity can be achieved via reduced operator
fatigue. To meet that end, the D475A-3 features improved operator controls that
provide easy manipulation of the machine.
According to Komatsu, its D475A-3 Super Dozer allows operators to push 15% more material in level dozing conditions than a standard configuration dozer.
The control lever of the 45-m3 (58.9-yd3) blade incorporates a proportional pressure control (PPC) design that provides precise, responsive control by applying hydraulic output to the blade in direct proportion to control lever movement. The steering/transmission joystick combined with a new servovalve provides greater "featherability."
The machine's Resilient Equalized Undercarriage (REU) features a unique "x-bogie" design to stabilize ride and enhance operator comfort while increasing traction. On uneven terrain, the x-bogie's seesaw movement follows the contours of the ground. On softer material or level ground, the x-bogie performs like a rigid undercarriage, maximizing tractive effort.
Its new cab provides more space and legroom, fully adjustable seats and armrests, and increased air-conditioning and heating capacity. Viscous damping mounts increase shock absorption and decrease vibration for operator comfort.
The Komatsu-engineered SDA12V140E engine delivers 642 kW (860 hp) at 2000 rpm and meets all EPA requirements. The new electronic governor and standard dual after-cooler circuit contribute to enhanced engine performance and fuel savings. Its oil-change interval has been doubled from 250 to 500 h due in part to the electronic governing system, enlarged sump, and filter improvements.
