John Deere's 1400 Series replace the company's F900 and F1145 front mowers. The new mowers are powered by liquid-cooled Yanmar engines, including the 21-kW (28-hp), gasoline-powered 1420; the 18-kW (24-hp), diesel-powered 1435; and the 23-kW (31-hp), diesel-powered 1445.
Deere claims the high-torque engines provide enhanced fuel economy, quieter operation, lower exhaust emissions levels, and quicker starting. The CARB-certified mowers have rear-mounted radiators, dual-element air cleaners, full-pressure lubrication, and 55-A alternators. Hydraulic PTO allows gradual engagement for smoother operation. Additionally, lower rpms provide for more quiet operation. The 55-L (14.5-gal) fuel tank enables all-day mowing for increased productivity.
To withstand wear and tear, the 1400s have high-strength, tubular steel frames; heat-treated, nodular cast-iron front and rear axles; heavy-duty, dual hydraulic cylinders; cast-iron rear bumpers; and composite hoods. (Members of the Society of the Plastics Industry voted GI Plastek its People's Choice annual award winner for innovative rear hood design of the John Deere 1400 and 1500 mowers.)

The patent-pending air intake system allows air to enter from the rear and side of the mower, resulting in lower sound levels at the operator station and less debris buildup.
The 1400 Series front mowers are available with 152- and 183-cm (60- and 72-in), 7-iron side-discharge mower decks. These decks feature a deep design with increased airflow so more material can be processed and the operator can mow at speeds up to 19 km/h (12 mph). All three models feature wet disc brakes and an 8-km/h (5-mph) reverse speed.
According to Deere, the 1400 mowers have the smallest front-mower turning radius in the industry, with a 50-cm (20-in) turning radius to the trim side that leaves only a 71-cm (28-in) uncut circle of grass. The tail-follow-trail designthe rear tires follow the front of the tractorand front-mounted, offset mower decks enable operators to mow and trim in tighter areas.
Foot-activated differential locks also allow operators to lock both drive wheels together for extra traction on hillsides and in slippery conditions. The lower center of gravity and wider tread width as well as optional four-wheel drive give increased stability and traction in both forward and reverse. Dual drive wheels are also optional.

Deluxe seats with armrests and retractable seatbelts are standard. They adjust fore and aft as well as for weight and height. Indicator lights are in front of the operator and are easy to see. The mowers have power steering, tilt wheel, two-pedal foot control, an operator-presence starting system, and also feature a cup holder and storage compartment. Two ROPS posts are standard equipment and an integral part of the frame. For ease of mowing in tighter spaces, the ROPS can be folded down.
To provide convenience in maintenance, the 1400 Series enhances accessibility, giving technicians ample room to perform all tasks. The hood slides back and the seat and foot panels flip up, allowing easy access to ensure daily maintenance is completed after a long day of hard mowing.
To access mower-deck zerks easily, the spindles are accessible from the top of the deck without removing the covers. The deck also rotates almost 90° for easier service and trailering.
