Composite throttle body

Delphi Corp. uses a grade of AMODEL polyphthalamide from Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, for the engine air control valve (or throttle body) in an outboard engine application. AMODEL A-1565 is a mineral- and glass-reinforced grade that exhibits a heat-deflection temperature of 271°C (520°F) and a flexural modulus of 2600 ksi (18,000 MPa). While these types of valves have traditionally been machined from aluminum, Delphi injection molds the component to tight tolerances in both the size and roundness of its bore. The dimensionally stable material allows for a sufficiently small gap at the valve seat for efficient engine operation and contributes to cost and weight savings.


Composite lining

Tribco Inc. claims its Kevlar fiber composite friction lining lasts three to five times longer than friction paper, sintered bronze, graphitic, and asbestos linings while not abrading the opposing metal surface. The lining delivers close static-to-dynamic ratios of friction coefficients at higher energy levels along with higher pressure in both wet and dry applications for brakes, clutches, power transmissions, PTOs, and other systems.


Clevis joints

mbo Osswald GmbH now supplies its clevis joints with hardened cross holes. The hardened clevis joints have a Rockwell C hardness of approximately 60 ±2, with a minimum specified hardness depth of 0.3 mm (0.012 in). Application for the joints include parts under high stress that could lead to premature distortion of the cross hole. The hardened joints can be supplied from course thread to fine thread and with left- or right-hand thread depending on application, as well as in galvanized steel.


Ultraviolet LED

High-powered ultraviolet LEDs from BivarOpto feature typical intensities from 500 mcd (700 mcd maximum), with a typical stable wavelength of 400 nm (15.7 µin). The series is suited for a range of specialty applications including automotive instrumentation, high-pressure hydraulic leak-detection systems, and test and measurement systems. Solid-state UV emission provides increased energy efficiency, cost economies, and longer life compared to non-solid-state UV lighting. The series features a 30° viewing angle and wavelength range from 390 to 410 nm (15.3 to 16.1 µin).


In-mold coating system

GI Plastek worked with Caterpillar to develop a two-stage, in-mold coating process via the ProTek in-mold system, in which a specially formulated clear coating is applied first to the open mold cavity then followed by a pigmented top-coat layer. The ProTek clear-coating demonstrated improved color and gloss retention than single-stage top-coat post paints and comparable performance to post-applied two-stage basecoat/clearcoat systems. The system was used to clear-coat exterior trim pieces including all metal and plastic components on the Challenger tractor series, with extensive improvements in distinctness of image and only a marginal increase in cost.


Air-hardening steel

Case-hardening Ovako 277 steel from Ovako Steel completes the firm's line of air-hardening steels, which includes Ovako 477 (quench and tempering steel) and Ovako 677 (through hardening bearing steel). The steels feature low carbon content that must be carburized to give the right structure. To provide a wear-resistant surface and a tough core, carbon is added to the surface layer. After carburizing, the material is slowly air-cooled. With this steel, the dimensional adjustment is almost completely eliminated since the manufactured products deform less during hardening.
