Robotic laser trimming

RoboLase from Robotic Production Technology is a pre-engineered laser trimming system for high-accuracy machining of plastic components, composites, and other materials. The work cells provide added flexibility over conventional CNC or manual trimming processes and allow the user to reduce or eliminate secondary final trimming operations. The cells consist of modular building blocks that can be configured to meet individual process and throughput needs. A six-axis robot and a robot-mounted CO2 or YAG laser (with a simplified beam delivery system) are integrated in each cell with a high-speed part-indexing turntable, system controls, a vacuum/negative air system, an air filtration package, and a "light-tight" cell enclosure.

Lift tables

Backsaver lift tables from Southworth Products Corp. are designed to improve productivity and worker safety in machine feeding, work positioning, assembly, order picking, pallet loading, and other applications. Contoured legs provide extra width at the pivot point, combining improved strength and a lower collapsed height. All pins, rollers, shafts, and bushings are lubricated for life. Heavy-duty torque tubes minimize twisting and deflection for improved rigidity. Oversize, low-pressure hydraulic cylinders extend the life of hydraulic components, while heavy-duty, wire-braided hoses have a burst strength 400% higher than the hydraulic operating pressure. Full-width axles and full-length roller retainers increase stability, even with off-center loads. The hydraulic return lines are clear plastic, providing visual indication when it is time to repack the cylinders.

Vibration monitors

The Series 684 enclosures from IMI Sensors can house up to eight Model 683 vibration meters. The systems are intended for machinery-condition monitoring to provide an early warning of impending failure of bearings or gears, reducing unanticipated downtime. The NEMA 4X fiberglass enclosures have factory-installed vibration meters for environmental protection and ease of installation. Each meter offers excitation power for 4 to 20 mA vibration sensors or ICP accelerometers and displays peak or rms vibration data on a fully scalable LED display. Two set point relays offer alarm or control capabilities. Relay action is time-delayed to eliminate false alarm trips due to momentary upsets.

Magnetic encoders

Admotec, Inc. has developed the Series EK6210, a line of magnetic kit encoders for high-performance applications in harsh environments, such as vector control of ac motor engine testing, machine tool spindles, and the sensing and positioning of large shafts in industrial equipment. The kits consist of a custom-configured magnetic encoder wheel and a matched magnetoresistive sensor with line-driver outputs for two incremental channels in quadrature. The kits are available with wheel diameters from 210 to 250 mm (8.25 to 10 in) and inside diameters sized to fit the application. The units are installed quickly, without the delicate alignment associated with optical encoders.

Flatness measurement

The Microgage Flatness Kit from Pinpoint Laser Systems consists of a laser transmitter that is mounted onto a precision turntable. The turntable allows the laser beam to rotate and define a plane of light that is flat to within 0.001 in (0.03 mm) over a range of 20 ft (6 m). A digital receiver, mounted on a base, can be moved around to various locations and provide a height reading relative to the flat plane of projected laser light. Industrial applications include checking machine beds and mounted fixtures for large mechanical assemblies and metal-cutting tools. The system can be used on roller and idler adjustments in mill applications, the alignment of fixtures and precision mounts, and measurements of runout on linear tables, slides, and transport conveyors.

Turning center

The ColchesterCNC Storm II 90 turning center is a thermally and dynamically insulated production machine, with a large 60° slant bed. Since the unit is 20% heavier than most machines in its class, it enables improved part cutting while the spindle drivetrain maintains power at the cutting face. The company's 12-position, high-speed turret with VDI 30 tooling is standard, and the spindle can be ordered with 4000 or 6000 rpm. An optional barfeed system can be operated and controlled directly from the machine's Fanuc control.
